This week we are going to be talking about finding the theme, or message, of a story. You might think of it like this... THE MEssage. (Thanks Eli!)

New Year, Great Start!
Off to a new year at GCMS! Welcome to all new seventh graders, and welcome back to our eighth graders.
White Team teachers sent home a letter with team expectations today. Please read and return with your signature. I'm including a copy of the letter here, just in case it doesn't make it home.

Team White Students and Parents,
Welcome back to school! We have started
off on a great note. As a team we believe that we have the best students in the
school. To start off let us introduce ourselves: Jenifer Willis teaches reading
and social studies; Kristi Miller, science and math lab; Jenna Youngblood,
reading and writing, and Meagan Ralph, math and leadership. Together we have
developed a set of team expectations which students are responsible for
following each day. We have a system in place that is designed to reward
positive behavior.
Parents, if you need to contact your
student during the school day this can be done before 7:45 and during lunch
from 11:17-11:44. Cell phones and other devices are allowed at school; however,
in class devices are only used for instruction per teacher permission. If a
student has a phone out without permission, teachers will follow the school
policy which can be found in the student handbook.
Team bucks will be awarded for positive
behavior. They may be issued for turning homework in completed and on time.
Team bucks can also be given for random acts of kindness as well as growth on
STAR testing. All students are expected to follow individual classroom rules,
however the extra mile will be rewarded using team bucks. These bucks will be
turned in every Friday during 3rd period classes. Team teachers will
keep a running total. At the end of each 9 weeks if students have a sufficient
number of team bucks (to be determined) they will participate in a free period
that will include a variety of activities (field day, movie day, board games,
etc).
STAR testing will be this Wednesday,
August 12, for Reading and Thursday, August 13 for Math. As a team we expect
students to try their best as well as grow (improve their scores) each time the
test is taken. Growth on STAR will result in a significant number of team
bucks. Students are required to be in class on time so they have the greatest
opportunity to learn. Any unexcused tardy will result in an infraction. Being
on time allows students to receive as much information as possible. Parents,
please encourage your students to get to class on time as well as try their
best on STAR.
As a team, we believe that all students
can rise to our expectations. Our students have exhibited A+ behavior thus far.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year with this spirited group. Students
and parents need to sign below signifying that you have read this letter and
understand our team expectations. If you need to contact one of us feel free to
use the emails provided. Looking forward to an AMAZING year.
